   What should I look out for when buying a crystal item?

   Always look out for clarity and bubbles. Check with the shop whether the item is full lead crystal or not. This is because full lead crystal is much more expensive than crystal items with lesser lead content. Also, check that the edges of the crystal are not chipped, and check for scratches on the item’s surfaces.

   Physically, how can you tell the differences between glass and crystal?

   Crystal is generally heavier in weight than glass, and it is brighter and clearer in appearance. Crystals are normally sold with cut patterns. This is to bring out the index of refraction, as the cut patterns has the ability to disperse light into the colour of the components of the visible spectrum with almost diamond like brilliance.

   If you mean actual “cut glass” leaded glass such as Waterford Crystal, then yes, the more cuts the better, because the more cuts there are, the more effort went into the design and execution.
